Baywatch: Bigger than Aid?
نویسنده
چکیده
As electricity networks expand, television is second only to lighting in terms of priority uses. A recent survey of households in a rural area of Indonesia showed how rapidly the technology spread. Within two years of electrification, television ownership was 30 percent. Within seven years of electrification, household ownership rates reached 60 percent –this in an area where average incomes were around $2/day. Compare this to refrigerators, which were owned by fewer than five percent of surveyed electrified households. Where there is still no electricity network, people hook televisions up to batteries -indeed, in a number of developing countries, household television ownership rates are higher than household electrification rates. Failing that, people in developing countries will frequently walk long distances to watch television.

Bigger and better? Scaling up and innovation in health aid.
As the volume of health aid to developing countries increases and allocations shift toward specific disease burdens, issues of allocation efficiency become more important to the achievement of better health outcomes. This paper examines (1) whether health aid--traditional and innovative--corresponds to recipients' needs and priorities and (2) how the terms of aid affect its efficiency. We find ...

متن کاملModeling Category Learning with Exemplars and Prior Knowledge
An open question in category learning research is how prior knowledge affects the process of learning new concepts. Rehder and Murphy’s (2003) Knowledge Resonance (KRES) model of concept learning uses an interactive neural network to account for many observed effects related to prior knowledge, but cannot account for the learning of nonlinearly separable concepts. In this work, we extend the KR...
متن کاملModeling the effects of prior knowledge on learning incongruent features of category members.
The authors conducted 3 experiments addressing the issue of how observations and multiple sources of prior knowledge are put together in category learning. In Experiments 1 and 2, learning was faster for critical features, which were predictable on the basis of prior knowledge, than for filler features, and this advantage increased as more observations were made. In addition, learning was faste...
متن کاملStudies of the characteristics of AFDC recipients.
Recently the Social Security Administration was given responsibility for the administration of the aid to families with dependent children (AFDC) program. The major source of national data describing AFDC recipients is a series of studies of the families that receive payments under the program. Eleven such studies have been conducted on an intermittent basis since the program began in 1936. The...
